Ex-Anglican primate kidnapped, rescued in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command on Tuesday evening rescued the former Primate of the Anglican Church, Nigeria, Most Revd. Peter Akinola, from his suspected abductors.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the former primate was rescued from his abductors along with his daughter and driver. Adejobi, a deputy superintendent of police, stated that the victims were rescued during a shootout with the armed men, who had earlier abducted the cleric and others at about 3pm along the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway.

He explained that the gunmen, who were heading towards the border area with victims, had shot at a police patrol around Iboro, Yewa North Local Government area of the state. The PPRO added that the policemen immediately returned fire and started pursuing the armed men driving in company with the victims in the SUV. He said, “We have rescued the primate, his daughter and driver.

But the operation is still ongoing. We have more than 10 teams in the area now trying to find the suspects who escaped with the victims’ vehicle. “We got information that the suspects went through Ilaro and were heading towards the border area.

But when they got to Iboro area, they opened fire at policemen on patrol and the policemen responded. The police pursued them until the victims were rescued.”
