Wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Take care.

Glos make Becca ambassador

Ghanaian music diva, Rebecca Acheampong, popularly known as Becca, has been signed on as Glo Mobile Ghana’s ambassador.

At a ceremony in Accra on Wednesday, Becca joined 17 other stars who had earlier been signed on by the company in Ghana. On September 1, 2009, GLO Mobile Ghana unveiled 17 brand ambassadors cutting across the very important social strata of the Ghanaian society from music to sports, movies and general entertainment. That event marked the first time any brand would assemble such a large cast of ambassadors from the crèème of Ghana’s best.

The leading music stars in the package include Nii Ado Quaynor alias Tiny, George Kwabena Adu (Kwabena Kwabena), Irene Logan and Nana Wiafe Asante Mensah (A.S.E.M). Popular Ghanaian footballer, Junior Agogo is also one of the ambassadors.

Others were screen idols Van Vicker, Jackie Appiah, Nadia Buhari and music icons, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Dan Amakye Dede, Pat Thomas, Paapa Yankson, the Wutah Brothers, Sherifa, Edem and Reggie Rockstone, the godfather of Ghanaian hip-life.

Mr John Vasikaran, who represented the company at the event said, “We opted for as many as 18 ambassadors in Ghana to vividly demonstrate that in our brand philosophy, we deliberately go beyond profit making which is the essence of any business endeavour”. He added that “GLO is a mega brand which proactively seeks every opportunity to provide the enabling platform to empower the society.”

The Ghana project manager said that the company has been impressed by the feedback received from the ambassadors it earlier engaged as they confirmed that the honour and recognition from GLO Mobile has greatly inspired them to continuously aspire to be the best, not just in Ghana but globally.

On the rationale for the choice of Becca, Mr Vasikaran said that, “Becca is a young, enterprising, vivacious and talented musician who shares our values of youthful, positive energy and innovativeness. She is one of Ghana’s most outstanding and versatile female musicians.”

He urged her to continue to be a leading light to millions of her fans who look up to her for inspiration as a role model and good ambassador of Glo Mobile.

“We will like to reiterate that the unveiling of Becca is part of the build up to the fulfilment of our avowed objective to roll out excellent and innovative telecommunications services that will immediately have a positive impact on every Ghanaian, and transform the telecommunications sector nationwide. We remain firmly committed to our vision to build the biggest and best telecommunications network in Africa”, said Vasikaran.

In her response, Becca said she regarded the contract she just signed with Glo as a major boost to her career, adding that she was excited about it all because Glo is an authentic African brand.

Becca became a national phenomenon in 2008 when she won the record of the year award at last year’s Ghana Music Awards ceremony. Her profile has been on the rise since as she has performed with greats like Hugh Masekela.

Koffi in Workerman Movement

Comedian Idowu Nuel, otherwise known as Koffi in the entertainment circle is taking his career to a higher level. Aside from being a comedian, the humour merchant has instituted an entertainment outfit — Workerman Movement.

Already, Koffi’s effort has started yielding fruit with the production of an album, All Eyes Open-12 Sessions, 5 Mics. A musical assemblage of five different artistes namely: Koffi, Yeankeyz, Outshine, Affroholik and Boomerang, is said to have been borne out of the need to foster serene and good music, which would be devoid of lewd lyrics and obscene contents.

Known as Workerholics, Koffi, who leads the group, is of the opinion that lovers of urban hippy music can easily identify with the production, while not disregarding the need for socially responsible thoughts. The 12-track album featured songs such as Jammin, S.E.X.Y, No Be Ashy, Adrenaline, Money, No Shigbin Shigbin, Take Over, Swagga Dis Swaga Dat, Going Nowhere, Workerholik and others.
“I’m into so many things, but right now, we would be releasing the album this December. We just wanted to show people that we can still do serious music,” he said.

On why he delved into music, Koffi explained that, “What we are doing is a full time job and should be treated as such. The same doctor that treats malaria treats cancer and also assists in giving birth to a baby. Those are different areas a doctor performs his duties. In the same vein, as a comedian, why can’t I do every other thing that I can do; as long as I don’t try to take another person’s piece of cake. I just try to express myself the best way I could.”

Mercy Johnson Set To Wed

Mercy Johnson – one of Nigeria’s fastest-rising actresses and one of Nollywood’s most eligible bachelorettes – is allegedly getting set to walk down the aisle with the man of her dreams.

Very reliable sources told NET, today, that the gifted-but-controversial actress is officially engaged to an Edo-born prince named Odanosen Okojie; and that the couple’s families have met officially for traditional introductions.

Miss Johnson is one of the sexiest actresses in Nigeria’s growing movie industry. And, in spite of repeated scandals and media bashings, the young actress has continued to rise; clinching role after role and proving to cynics that she’s not all about cleavages and see-through dresses and superiority battles.

The young lady gets credit for her acting skills. And, just like Genevieve Nnaji and Rita Dominic before her, she’s getting the men looking and watching and lusting and wishing they could kidnap her for a weekend or more.

Those dreams may never come to pass now; as Mercy Johnson plans to settle down and concentrate on life as a Mrs.

Reliable sources told NET the pre-wedding traditional introductions held at her family home in Ebiraland (Okene, Kogi State) on Friday November 27.

A wedding date has been fixed for April 2010.

”They’ve had the introduction”, our source offers. ”They’ve given her fiance the list of things required for the engagement and marriage; and a date has been fixed”.

Mercy Johnson’s groom, according to our findings, is a businessman who has interests in Property and Automobiles.

Star Mega Jam excites Busta Rhymes, Ludacris

Busta Rhymes and Ludacris, the two international artistes featuring in the upcoming Star Mega Jam 2009, have promised music lovers in Nigeria the best performances ever witnessed at a live music concert. According to them, featuring in Star Mega Jam, Nigeria’s most exciting and enduring music concert which draws a multitude of music fans would give them the much cherished opportunity to reach out to a large number of their fans in Nigeria.

Both artistes are very excited about the upcoming show. Perhaps, taking a cue from other international stars who have also appeared on the Star Mega Jam stage, Busta Rhymes implored Nigerians to come out in their numbers to have fun.

“Nigeria, nothing do you”, he said. Busta Rhymes, one of hip-hop’s most enduring iconic figures and acknowledged among rap’s greatest lyricists and performers, believes pressure is a natural phenomenon in life that can spring forth beautiful, planetary wonders.

Then again, it can bring chaos and mayhem if not properly managed. Yet it is a necessary force that separates the weak from the strong, the real from the fake and the mediocre from the extraordinary. Busta Rhymes’ many international pop, rap and urban top tens has extended well over a decade.

They range from the platinum Grammy-nominated single “Woo-Hah!! Got You All in Check” through the No. 1 Hip-Hop/R&B and No. 3 pop “What’s it Gonna Be?!” featuring Janet Jackson and “Pass the Courvoisier” with P. Diddy and Pharrell, and into the digital era with the gold-certified song “Touch It.”

Ludacris described as hip hop highest –selling southern hip-hop solo artiste of all time with over 24 million records sold worldwide, 16 Grammy nominations, out of which he has won 6. The music star, who is working on his seventh major album release” Battle of the sexes” which focuses on the differences between men and women says he wants his fans to feel like they are part of the music.

His acting career remains on an enviable trajectory. After Star making appearances on the NBC drama Law and Order SVU,the Oscar_winning Crash and the Independent film sensation Hustle & Flow,Ludacris stands as one of the most_in demand actors in Hollywood.

They would be joined by Nigeria’s biggest twin singing sensation P_Square, D’Banj, Faze, Timaya, and 9ice to thrill music lovers at the concert holding in Lagos at Lagos Polo Club on December 11 and Old Parade Ground, Abuja on December 12th,2009.

It’s the tenth edition of the annual international music concert and Star, the nation’s number one lager is poised to make this a memorable one for music lovers nationwide.

He also emphasizes on how much his life has changed, how rich he is now and how thankful to God he is for His blessings stressing that even though he his now well-to-do, he remains that humble plantain seller.

This is the first official single off his forthcoming album, the follow-up to "The Gift and The Grace". Although "The Gift and The Grace" album was a success, Timaya has been plagued with issues ranging from his church brawl with estranged girlfriend Empress Njamah to public spats made at him by fellow artistes like Nico Gravity (who directed a diss track titled "I wan Finish Timaya" at him) and African China (who made negative comments about him on radio). He's been criticized for his self-appraisal style and repetitive lyrics from various quarters.

9ice Drops First Single off His Upcoming album titled TRADITION

Multiple award winning Alapomeji recording artist 9ice has officially dropped the first single off his upcoming album "TRADITION". The single titled "GBAMU GBAMU" is one of the many hit songs recorded by 9ice. The album which has been tagged "the most anticipated album of 2009" features hit track after hit track, no instrumentals and no skits.

A fusion of proverbial lyrics in his mother tongue (Yoruba), a danceable tune, and a unique style that is known to belong to 9ice, Gbamu Gbamu gives a brief insight of what to expect from TRADITION. In Gbamu Gbamu, 9ice sings about how happy and content he is with his life, career, music and achievements. To start off the first verse it is clear he wants to audience to get up and dance as he tells them to put on their dancing shoes, and move their waistline while getting their groove on. He gives us a brief background history by stating matter of factly that if you want to know his "trick", go back and ask for "omo Iya Agba ni oke aro" telling us in essence that, he may be 9ice but he has not forgotten his roots.

The track which was produced by ID Cabasa, is clearly a 9ice track and just the tip of the iceberg on what to expect on Tradition. Not leaving out his usual style of teaching and inspiring the listener through his music, 9ice makes statements such as “Ti oju Ba farabale a ri imu” ( a lesson in patience), and “Ifa Fani Lapo Ya, ore ma ma mu yo” ( a lesson about greed).

9ice, who is one of Nigeria’s hottest megastars and one of the youngest connoisseurs of our traditions, proves without a doubt that he is a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. And as he said in Gbamu Gbamu, "as you pose, na so you go show", you just cant fake real talent.

Darey dominates NMVA nominations

Nigeria’s King of R&B Darey Art Alade has packed six nominations for the 3rd Nigerian Music Video Awards, making him the highest nominee this year.

Liz Benson returns to Nollywood

Few months after her clergy man took her to the altar, remarried Nollywood legend, Elizabeth Benson, may have signalled her strong desire to return to her first love, acting.

HVP reliably gathered that Liz is warming up to return to Nollywood as soon as possible.

An insider source confirmed to HVP that the screen idol has already started making contacts in order to return to the industry, which she reportedly abandoned some years back.

Liz Benson got married again in an intimate court ceremony in Abuja a few months ago. In July, she and her man, Bishop Great Emeya, celebrated their love by walking down the aisle at the Rainbow Christian Assembly in Warri, Delta State. The couple are both deeply involved in Christian ministry.

Liz is an evangelist while Bishop Great is a pastor of one of the largest ministries in Warri. They also have overcome tragic circumstances as Liz is a widow while Bishop Great is a widower. Their wedding marked a turning point in the lives of the couple.

Reports had it that the 49 year-old man allegedly met Liz in the course of doing God’s work. Their relationship however moved from friendship to the altar, now husband and wife.

A recipient of the movie awards, THEMA, and the Reel Awards at different times, Liz Benson is one of the pioneer actresses in Nigeria who brought glamour and respect to the acting profession.

She has also been honoured outside Nigeria at several times. Liz was a past recipient of the Afro-Hollywood Awards in the United States of America. Her great performances in the past have been regularly acknowledged and rewarded by both industry practitioners and watchers .

The deluge of awards and accolades with which she has been showered and continues to receive is vivid testimony to the high esteem in which she is held by all.

As she returns to Nollywood, expectations are high as questions are being asked, regarding what role she will be assigned to, given the fact that many of her contemporaries are presently not in the picture, with the emergence of vibrant looking, yet pretty young faces. Good luck our Lizzy!

Danger disappoints P-Square

The duo of Peter and Paul Okoye have announced that their new album has recorded over a million sales in less than three weeks of its release. The album, titled ‘Danger’ was released on the 15th of September into the Nigerian market for sales.

Their manager, Jude Okoye, said, “We waited for four days after the official press brief before releasing it. The reason we did that was because we wanted to release 600, 000 copies at a go. We monitored the sales and kept calling our marketer to know the response it was getting. By the 8th day, over a million units had been pushed.”

Measuring the success against that of their third album, ‘Game Over’ which was recorded to have gone platinum also, the twins said they were not surprised about the sales but were rather disappointed. “We actually expected to cross over a million sales by the 4th day. ‘Game Over’ made a million in six days and we wanted to beat that record. Unfortunately, ‘Danger’ dragged until the 8th day,’ Jude explained while his brothers affirmed.

When the issue of actual statistics was raised, the group’s publicist, Sesan Adeniji said it was easy for one to estimate the sale of an art work. He said, “Most album sleeves are printed in Shomolu and that is where my office is.

At first 600, 000 sleeves were printed, then another 300,000, followed by 200, 000. And it’s since continued like that.” Peter added by reminding that for a marketer to admit having sold a huge figure, he (the marketer) realizes the consequence because it influences the royalties he will be paying them (owners of the work).

‘Danger’ is marketed in Nigeria by CN Media and is the fourth album of pop group P-Square..By Lolade Sowoolu

Obiwon berths sophomore

It was an evening of quality music, dance and superlative entertainment as popular Nigerian act, Obiora Obiwon performed fresh tunes at the launch of his anticipated sophomore album, “The Rebirth”.

The album soon revealed itself to be an eclectic mix of contemporary gospel and r’n’b as earlier indicated by the artiste. In 2008, Obiwon made several references to a deep spiritual experience and the addition of gospel themes to his style.

Upbeat ballad and first single off the album “Obi Mu O” also rose in 2009 to become one of year’s favourite hits.

Guest artistes, Alibaba and Yaw had the audience reeling in laughter with their comedic lines while Segun Obe, Rooftop MCs, Jahdiel, Eva, Kani, and Bracket of “Yori Yori” fame also ensured it was a memorable musical night for the celebrities and fans in attendance.

Guests also went home with free copies of the album which finally hit stores in Nigeria, yesterday, Friday October 2, via Obaino Music Distribution.

A visibly excited Obiwon had this to say: “We’re elated having come thus far. We really took our time to do this (the album) and we’re hoping the fans appreciate it for the excellence we’ve strived to achieve. We’re now off to promote the album and do the videos.”

Abuja awaits Gordons’ 7-Point Agenda

When President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua revealed his Seven Point Agenda in his inaugural speech May 29, 2007 it would never have occurred to him what one hilarious citizen called, ‘Godwin Komone,’ and baptized, ‘Gordons,’ will make of his plan, three days after Nigeria’s 49th Independence Celebrations.

But the President must face this because on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at Sheraton Hotel and in Nigeria’s capital city, Gordons would publicly lend a comic voice to the much debated agenda – and Abuja residents can’t wait to chuckle at whatever his hilarious side of the discuss would be.

“The Show is not just going to be like any other comedy show,” the dark comedian assures. “We want to address pressing issues with so much humour; we want people to laugh and also take something home. As comedians, we have moved from the level of being funny to being Social Commentators. I believe with this comedy show we should be able to interlink reality into hilarity.

“I have a passion to also talk to government, and talk to people from all walks of life, and that’s what will happen on the forth of October. So, I envisage a comedy event where all acts on stage will say something about the Seven Point Agenda.”

Stella Damacus-Nzeribe has assured to be her dazzling and comic best as she comperes the event alongside Ghana’s luminary actor, Van Vicker. Together, they will bring a touch of Nollywood into Gordons debut Live Comedy show, which has Dare Art-Alade, J-Maritns, Samsung, Kefee, Jesse Jaggs, Clever Jay, and Duncan Mighty on the bill.

cfAli Baba, predictably, leads Basket mouth, Julius Agwu, I Go Dye on the funny slide, while Okey Bakkasi, Gandoki, AY and Youngest Oldman are other funny bones expected at the show promoted by Yankee Entertainment – Abuja’s number one Showbiz Promoters.

From Gordons’ point of view, “Mr. President has not publicized the Agenda well enough. Elsewhere in developed nations, Governments try out new ideas with comedians. When they talk about it, the government measures the reaction of their citizens, and they know what next to do.”

“I want to use this comedy show to talk about Yar Adua’s 7 point Agenda,” he stresses in conclusion. “ The Show will be recorded, and sold on VCD’s. That means when people buy and watch the show at home, they will understand the Agenda better. Since the government is not considering that, we want to show the example – if we don’t do that, who will?”

Obesere to release hip hop album

Paramount King of Fuji, Abass Akande Obesere last weekend made a dramatic sign up for a relatively new record label, Stingomania Records.

Obesere, until last week, was to sign for another record label and both parties confirmed weeks back that agreement had been reached except for some few areas that needed to be sorted out before they both put pen to paper. But with what happened last week, ‘few areas’ were not sorted out and neither of the parties was able to put pen to paper.

Obesere, who was one of the two highest selling artistes during the glorious days of Sony Music, has finished work on his first hip-hop album and industry watchers have said that his latest effort will redefine him and stamp his authority on the hip-hop market.

The album, which has been aptly titled Revolution, has 12 tracks and features heavyweights of music industry such as 9ice, Lord of Ajasa, Timaya, Uncle Promise, Eazy Lizy and young Trybson.. With the Revolution album, Obesere has pioneered a new genre of music for himself which he calls ‘Fuji-hop’, a fusion of Fuji element with heavy infusion of hip-hop.

That was clearly evident in the track with 9ice, Kin Noso, and in Gbose yewo. He was even audacious with his track, Ka anyi Gbe Egwu’ an Igbo song he did with Timaya.

The incursion is to help him ease the Igbo market, where he believes he has wide followership as well. Chairman of Stingomania Records, Ope Banwo said, “We are ecstatic
to sign and manage a megastar with a cross-over appeal like Obesere.

We are also doubly excited to partner with him in leading the Fuji-Hop revolution that will finally merge the fans of Fuji and Hip-Hop under one music umbrella with Obesere as the paramount king of music as the leading force. We can’t wait for the Revolution album to hit the airwaves! A nation-wide tour with top hip-hop act has been planned for the album, which is due for release in October.

Terry G readies video for hit single Free Madness

Hot in demand, producer cum artiste, Gabriel Amanyi a.k.a Terry G is about now plotting a script for the music video of his hit single entitled Free Madness.

Speaking more about the yet to be shot video, Terry G revealed that the video will be shot where he grew up and his fans should expect nothing but a mad concept.

“The video for the single Free Madness will be shot in the hood where I grew up and it will be directed by me while Igho will produce the video. It will be shot in two weeks’ time and the concept is nothing but a mad one,” he added.

He also talked about how the inspiration for the song came about: “It’s a beat I did for my friend. His name is Black. I was making the beat for the song which we were supposed to do together.

And as usual, before I begin every recording session in my studio, I usually test the microphone. I always test the microphone to get all the settings right so that when you start voicing, the voice of the artiste sounds right and clean.

While they were outside, I was inside, trying to get the sound settings right. All of a sudden, I was in the mood and I decided to free-style on the beat I prepared for him. I took the song straight from the beginning; with no harmony and no back up.

And it is surprising that the song is causing a lot of stir in the industry today,” he enthused.
Also speaking about his rumoured deal with Mo’ Hits Records, Terry G said, “I am not signed on to Mo’ Hits Records.

They are my colleagues and I respect them a whole lot, especially Don Jazzy’s productions. That is why you see me hanging around with them.

They know their onions and the artistes on record label are the most packaged acts in the industry at the moment. But I am not signed on to the record label. I am doing my own thing called Terry G’s Production (TGP) that I currently run.”

Finally, the artiste spoke about his forthcoming album., saying, “It’s actually a package from my first album. I am about to promote a new image and it is even more than what people expect. I have a variety of songs that will please ears and the album is a commercial album.

There will be 12 tracks on the album and I am producing all the songs on the album. I am also working on my younger brother’s album. His name is D’ Money.”

P-Square raises bar, gets N50m deal on new album

If information reaching us is anything to go by, then the Nigerian music industry might have to brace itself for this. Nigeria’s mega pop twins, P-Square, have allegedly concluded plans for the marketing, duplication and distribution of their new album by a Nigerian marketer (names withheld) in exchange of a sum of N50m.

According to our sources, the twins are alleged to have received a cheque for the sum of N40m already out of the entire N50m sum agreed. It is a common practice for artistes to sign marketing deals and relinquish distribution and duplication rights to marketers, especially Alaba based ones.

Their last album, “Game Over”, was sold to Tjoe Enterprise, a major Alaba marketer, for nationwide distribution for an alleged sum of N10m. It is of no doubt that the value of the boys has since appreciated between late 2007 when they released “Game Over” having headlined gigs and major concerts within and outside the country, increasing fan bases all across Africa and gradually becoming Africa’s Michael Jackson since their performances now cause girls to faint in admiration of their skill and looks.

Only last week, the twins released a brand new South African shot video exclusively to MTV. The video, according to tradition, was directed by manager cum elder brother, Jude Okoye. It’s titled “Danger”. The Okoye music trio have managed to successfully keep their music business within family, running a label >Square Records= exclusively for the P-Square brand.

The twins openly brag about their conquering all of Africa except the four Northern African countries: Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.

By the time they play in these countries, they say they would be done with Africa, and set for other continental conquests.

From attending a small Catholic school, St. Mulumba College, in Jos, the boys have advanced in life, releasing their first album “Last Nite” in 2003, on Timbuk2 Music Label. Later, the dance duo hit broader limelight with their “Senorita” dance steps in their second album which they titled, “Get Squared”, in 2005, after which the boys have remained permanent delight.

Paul, the reserved of the two, seems to have overtaken Peter in terms of looks since he started spotting the dreads. Peter, on the other hand, has grown from the young dude of yesterday to a recklessly tattooed young father, whose son was delivered by Lola Omotayo.

The twins’ success is coming in the wake of the recent hunger strike and “No music day” embarked on by aggrieved members of the different music bodies in the country. The actions were in protest of the increasing level of piracy of musical works in Nigeria and its (piracy) negative impact on returns on music investments. Of course, the duo were visibly absent at the rally, just like many of their fellow A-list colleagues.

In an interview granted to a national daily, P-Square explained how they get around the piracy issues and maximise profit. They reportedly said, “What we do is that we strike a deal in Nigeria, go to Ghana and strike a deal, then to Gabon, Liberia, Tanzania and Uganda. In Nigeria, we have Tjoe. What we did for the album in Nigeria was that we calculated how much 10 million copies was worth and the marketer paid us straight away. That’s how we do our business.

“That’s why you can never hear any story that P-Square is having problem with any marketer. The album sold a million copies in four days. That’s the audio. But the surprising part of it is that the day we released the videos, the guy printed just 1.5 million copies and sold all the same day,” they said.

Although little is known about the details of this new album, the duo are said to have featured 2Face on one of the tracks contained in the album as they eye an October, 2009 release. Their last album, released in 2007, is reported to have sold over 10 million copies worldwide...By Lolade Sowoolu
