The Convener of the Save Nigeria Group, Pastor Tunde Bakare, on Monday morning denied rumours that he had been arrested by security agents.
In a posting on Twitter, Bakare wrote, “Many thanks to all concerned. I haven’t been arrested. I’m a law-abiding citizen — why would anyone want to arrest me?”
In a separate posting on SNG’s Facebook account, Bakare wrote, ”Please remain calm in your homes. We have maintained a stance of peace throughout the protests and must not be rash at this critical hour.
“We have also said NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER, and we remain FIRMLY committed to seeing #occupynigeria through. Details of our next move will be made public as soon as possible. Please remain calm and patient.”
Some of Bakare’s associates said on Twitter that he did not turn up at the Gani fawehinmi Freedom park in Ojota, Lagos on Monday morning because he did not want security agents to use the opportunity to kill protesters.
But there were unconfirmed reports that soldiers arrested some people at Ojota for taking pictures of them.
Also, a soldier was shown wagging a finger at a Television Continental cameraman at Ojota, to stop filming the military barricades around the park.
Meanwhile, a large crowd has gathered at Alapere on Oworonsoki Expressway, demanding to be allowed access to the park.
They were stopped by soldiers deployed by the Federal Government to stop street protests in Lagos.
There is palpable tension across Lagos State while many people remained in their homes. Commercial buses have stayed away from major roads in the state.
