Keshi’s salary tied to performance

The Nigeria Football Federation on Wednesday okayed Stephen Keshi as the new Super Eagles coach. And as the federation works out the final details of his contract, it was learnt that he may get a graduated salary package.

"It was a unanimous decision taken by the NFF for the appointment of Keshi as the new head coach of the national team," NFF first Vice-President Mike Umeh said.

Another member of the Federation who played a key role in the processes leading to Siasia’s sack and Keshi’s selection told us on the telephone that the football body did not name any person as assistant for the new coach.

By graduated salary package, the former coach of Togo and Mali may get N5m as Siasia, but would start at certain level and move up gradually depending on his performance within the next one year.

The official said, "He could get the N5m or less at the end but the plan is to start from midway and work upwards. Rather than just give one European N15m, we want to give qualified Nigerians chance to manage the Eagles but they have to earn the salary through their hard work."

Keshi has been handed the mandate of taking Nigeria to both the 2013 Nations Cup on South Africa and the Brazil 2014 World Cup.

He has also been given freedom to choose his own assistants as was done with Siasia who was sacked by the NFF last Friday.

The other detail of the conditions set for Keshi is that he must accept to work with a foreigner as the technical director.

The NFF members who spoke with our correspondent said it was the main condition of service and that the issue had created problems in the past.
