Nigeria Showbiz: the good, the bad Memories Of 2011



In less than 48 hours, there would be celebrations all over the world to usher in the new year, 2012. As expectations are high ahead of the New Year, P.M Entertainment hereby highlights the good, the bad and the ugly memories of the outgoing year 2011.


Death: Popular Yoruba movie producer and actor, Ishola Durojaiye, otherwise known as Alasari died in an auto crash on his way to Lagos from his base in Abeokuta,Ogun State. The sad event took place on 22 March.


Chidinma Mbalaso, one of the finalists in the 2009 edition of Koko Mansion, a reality TV show organised by D’banj also died in an auto crash in Kaduna.


Veteran Nollywood actor, Ashley Nwosu died at the Military Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, after a protracted battle with liver ailment.


On 30 June, the entertainment industry was thrown into another session of mourning as the acclaimed Lady of Songs, Christy Essien Igbokwe died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after a brief illness.


In what seems to be the most sudden death of the year, legendary actor, Sam Loco Efe, died in his room at Rapour Hotel, Owerri, Imo State shortly after returning from location.


Barely a week before Loco’s death, 26 June to be precise, United Kingdom-based actress and movie marketer, Yemisi Eleto died some hours after returning from an all-night gig.


What could be regarded as the most painful death of the year was that of wave-making rapper, Obiajulu Kenneth Nwaozor, otherwise known as MC Loph. He and his only sister died in an auto crash along Benin-Ore express way. The ugly incident happened on 14 September when the musician was on his way to the East for his traditional wedding. His fiancée was also in the car. She sustained severe injuries.


However, the deaths that rocked the entertainment industry in 2011 cannot be complete without mentioning that of popular Nollywood producer and actor, Donald Nzubechukwu Okoli who died in his sleep on 23 September.


WEDDING: In what seems to be the most controversial wedding of the year, sultry actress, Mercy Johnson tied the knot with her heartthrob, Prince Okogie.


Music producer, K-Solo, Chinedu ‘Aki’ Ikedieze, Oby Gold Edozieh and Muma Gee also got hooked.


DIVORCE: Popular actress, Kate Henshaw, was not too lucky with her 12-year old marriage to British hubby, Mr. Nuttal. The marriage hit the rocks a few weeks after the actress celebrated her 40th birthday in an elaborate ceremony.


Actress Chika Ike was also a victim of divorce, just as Fred Aseroma filed a divorce suit against his wife.


ILLNESS: The Chairman, Board of Trustees of Actors Guild of Nigeria, Prince Ifeanyi Dike, survived a kidney transplant in an Indian hospital. Yoruba actress, Tayo Odueke, otherwise known as Sikiratu Sindodo also battled a protracted strange ailment. She is said to be recuperating at the moment.


Another popular actor, Kayode Odumosu a.k.a. Pa Kasumu also battled liver ailment, while veteran actor, Enebeli Elebuwa and Segun Bucknor are down with stroke.


ROBBERY: Paul Okoye of P-Square fame, Denrele Edun, Muyiwa Ademola, Wiz Kid and Ajala Jalingo were at one point or the other victims of armed robbery attacks in the outgoing year.


ACCIDENT: While some entertainers died in auto accidents, some were quite lucky as they survived the crashes. Actress Uche Jombo, Chika Ike, Peter Okoye and Terry G, were among the notable entertainers that were also involved in auto crashes respectively.


ARREST: Yoruba comedy actor, Baba Suwe, was arrested and detained by officials of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) over a substance suspected to be cocaine in his stomach. He was released three weeks after the agency failed to substantiate its claims.


Actress Bimbo Akinsanya was arrested and interrogated by the police for allegedly conspiring with some hoodlums to kill a female pastor.
