Baba Suwe remains in NDLEA custody

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has detained popular comedian, Babatunde Omidina for alleged drug trafficking.

The NDLEA claimed the actor popularly known as Baba Suwe was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Wednesday night when he was about boarding an Air France plane to Paris.

Spokesman for the agency, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, who confirmed the detention, however, said Baba Suwe had yet to “begin excretion” as at 5pm on Thursday.

He said the actor would “remain under observation in the agency’s custody for some days.”

A top official of the agency at the MMIA Command, who spoke to our correspondent on Thursday evening, said Baba Suwe was being detained because he was suspected to have ingested some substances.

These, the source said, were detected by the scanning machine at the airport.

The source said, “He went through our machine and it showed that he might have ingested some substances. He denied he had ingested any drugs. So we have to give him the benefit of the doubt by detaining him until he goes to the toilet. Up till now (at about 5pm on Thursday), he has yet to go to the toilet.

“If he goes to the toilet thrice and nothing is found on him, we will allow him go. But there are a few cases when the machine indicates a suspect is positive and it eventually turns out to be negative.”

Meanwhile, NDLEA said it had arrested 291 suspected drug traffickers and seized 612.68kg of narcotics with an estimated value of N6.1bn at the airport, the MMIA, between January 2010 and September 2011.
