Why Baba Suwe's visitors are restricted, phones monitored - NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Monday explained why the visitors of detained ace actor, Mr. Babatunde Omidina, popularly called Baba Suwe, were restricted and his telephone calls monitored.

The agency spokesman, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, who spoke with our correspondent, said the Nollywood star’s telephone calls were being monitored by anti-narcotics investigators for security and investigative reasons.

He also said some categories of visitors, who might jeopardise investigation, were not allowed to see the ace comedian.

Ofoyeju said, "We allow his lawyer to see him. We also allowed his immediate family members to see him; his son has visited him. Only some people who may jeopardise the investigation are not allowed to see him.

"We allow him to make calls but our investigators have to be around. This is also important for security reasons."

According to him, only the agency’s anti-narcotics investigators could determine any visitors considered to be injurious to the agency’s investigation.

The spokesman denied that a photograph showing Baba Suwe excreting, published in a newspaper on Friday, originated from the agency.

"That picture did not originate from us. It is a calculated attempt to discredit the man," he said.

The NDLEA arrested Omidina on October 12 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja on the suspicion that he ingested substances suspected to be illicit drugs.

Justice Okechukwu Okeke of a Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday granted the NDLEA the permission to detain the actor for 15 more days.

The actor’s lawyer, Mr Bamidele Aturu, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday that he would on Monday initiate legal proceedings to vacate the order.

Aturu, however, failed to file his ex-parte order on Monday as he was not at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, as earlier planned.
