Headies Awards holds in October

The endless wait for when this year’s Headies Awards would hold is over. Early in the week, the executive producer, Ayo Animashaun, announced via a statement that the awards ceremony has picked October 22 as the day when the most talented Nigerian musicians and allied professionals would be honoured and celebrated for their artistry and enterprise in the year under review.

Animashaun states, “We took all this time to come up with concepts that will surpass the previous editions. We are glad to raise the standard again, far above what we have set over the years. This year, a lot of obvious changes will be seen, I can assure you of this.”

Contrary to an earlier statement from the organisers that the awards would be moved out of Lagos in order to give it a pan-Nigerian outlook as the case was in 2009 when it held in Abuja, the awards stays put at the Expo Hall of the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. The theme for this year’s event is ‘Standout, Surpass and Break from the norm’. An accompanying theme song, produced by fast rising producer, Samklef, and rendered by some of the best vocalists in the country today like Waje, Illbliss, Ice Prince and Wizkid, was released last July.

Now in its fifth year, the 2011 Headies, formerly known as the Hip Hop World Awards, will be hosted by Nollywood actress, Rita Dominic and singer-producer, Lanre ‘eLDee’ Dabiri. In all, there are 21 categories and by extension, 21 Headies, made of 21 carat gold, up for grabs. Only the Next Rated category, where Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, Ice Prince and Olamide will slug it out, has a brand new car prize attached to it.
